    Java Indonesian Restaurant in Randwick
I was introduced to the many wonders of the Indonesian cuisine by a workmate from many years ago. Someone whom I affectionately call WuWu. She is the sweetest and most delightful person. I have to admit that I have not visited an Indonesian restaurant since her return to her motherland. Indonesian food just isn't the same without her. One day, my sisters unexpectedly asked if I wanted to go along with them to Java. Apparently it is one of the better Indonesian restaurants that is scattered around Kensington, Kingswood and Randwick. I immediately wanted to pick up the phone and call WuWu and ask for her help as to what to order, but she was too far away and an email just won't cut it. So I went along without any idea what to expect and had a wonderful time. This one's for you Wuwu. I miss you little lady. We started off with Otak Otak, a grilled fish cake wrapped in banana leaves. The fish flavour is very subtle, in fact, almost non-existant. The texture is quite soft, sticky and spongey. The coconut, chili, peanut sauce poured over it gives the fish cakes a necessary punch of flavour. The Martabak is a crispy fried pastry stuffed with beef mince, egg and shallots. We weren't sure what to expect when we ordered this surprisingly delicious dish. The pastry was thin and crunchy. The stuffing consisted mostly of a fluffy egg mixture and wonderfully crispy shallots. The Ayam Betutu is a…

Bitton Gourmet – Cafe and Grocer
I had come across Bitton Gourmet in the Sydney Morning Herald Foodies Guide 2010. Its little blurb about their famous jams and dressings was enticing enough for me to view their website. From that point on my curiosity grew. I loved the description of a green grocer, cafe, and gourmet food shop, and was convinced I had to pay a visit. Pizzaboy and I invite Papa & Mama Bear along with us for a Sunday Lunch. It turned out we got more than what we expected and truly love and believe in this wonderful establishment in Alexandria. We arrive at the store in between the breakfast and lunch rush. We were seated inside the cafe as the tables outside were all occupied. I was slightly disappointed because I prefer my food pictures to be lit by sunlight. I politely ask if we could move when there is a table free. The lovely staff member did not hesitate and checked for me, he came back and said that we were more than welcome to move to a table that was just vacated. I breathe a sigh of relief. It seemed like the place to be, the cafe was quickly filling up and there is a constant flow of customers throughout our visit. We order our drinks and I cannot stay in my seat! I head towards the fruit boxes, the apples are sweetly scented and tomatoes unblemished. One of the signs says that the fruit and vegetables are fresh from Flemington…

Ramen Kan in Bondi – Errrr… What’s all the noise about?
A Funny Red-headed Guy once told me that his favourite restaurant is McDonalds. He wasn't a child. He is 29 years old, skinny, tall, handsome, prefers never to wear shoes and never shuts up. You see, I am the kind of person who always asks what people are eating or what are their favourite restaurants. I try and connect with people through food. When Funny Red-headed Guy told me this I couldn't help but screw my face up in judgement. "Oi. Don't bag out the Macca's. I grew up on the stuff. Now look at me." He strikes a pose. Who am I to judge? If eating McDonalds makes him happy, then good for him. He also told me that his favourite ramen is from Ramen Kan. He said that their ramen makes everyone else's seem like instant noodles. I immediately wrote the recommendation down in my mental checklist of places to visit. I had heard of Ramen Kan and was quite excited by his description of their egg noodles. Pizzaboy and I find ourselves in Bondi one beautiful day with little idea of what we wanted for lunch. We settle for Ramen Kan. Their menu has a dizzying array of food items and I cannot decide what I want. I must've taken about 5 minutes to come to a decision. The waiter had approached us 4 times to get our order. I became slightly annoyed and politely told her that I will call for her when I am ready.…
